POSITION DESCRIPTION
Reporting directly to the National Director of Operations and Finance, the Senior Director of Strategic Human Resources is responsible for guiding leaders across multiple sites in recruiting, developing, motivating and retaining Year Up’s talented staff.  With a current team of two direct reports in Year Up’s National Office, s/he will organize, align, and dramatically expand strategic priorities focused on organizational and people development.  Existing programs are grounded in a competency model and include recruitment and selection, performance management and pipelining (succession planning), training and development, diversity and cultural competency, and staff relations and culture.  A key piece of the work involves helping Year Up define further how National staff members can best provide service to multiple, independent program sites.  The successful candidate for this position is smart, strategic, diplomatic and proactive. S/he must also be flexible to work in a fast-paced, highly interactive environment.

In keeping with Year Up’s values, the Senior Director of Strategic Human Resources will also interact with students as a mentor and group facilitator, participating in creating and sustaining a positive educational environment with trust among students, faculty and other staff. 

KEy Responsibilities
The Senior Director of Strategic Human Resources ensures Year Up is the best place for talented staff to work and build a career.  Building on a foundational competency model and working closely with Executive Teams across local sites, s/he will oversee all strategic aspects of the Talent Life Cycle (i.e., non-administrative/transactional HR items) and help local managers design and implement the aspects.  These include, but are not limited to:
Recruitment and Selection
  • Support effective orientation and transition of all new team members by reviewing existing processes, gaining site feedback, and proposing the next level of sophistication
  • Work with Executive Directors across sites to develop and coordinate an on-going campaign to ensure an active pipeline of candidates
  • Provide support to hiring managers by continuously improving the processes for developing the candidate pool to ensure outreach to diverse sources of talent, resume screening, interview management, collating of feedback, development of a recruiting database, reference strategizing, offer preparation, etc. 
  • Recommend “recruitment and selection” metrics for reporting to managers, senior leaders, and board
Performance Management and Pipelining
  • Facilitate pipelining sessions with senior leadership team, including analyzing and communicating trends, assembling performance/potential matrices, and pushing leaders to develop staff
  • Interface with Executive Directors across sites to understand their feedback and needs
  • Manage and propose next level of sophistication in performance review system, including driving compliance on performance evaluations, development plans, and Roles, Goals, and Accountabilities at all levels of the organization and working with team to develop an online performance management system fitting all needs of the organization
  • Recommend “performance management and pipelining” metrics for reporting to managers, senior leaders, and board
Training and Development
  • Work with Executive Directors to articulate Year Up’s training and development philosophy to include on-the-job, Year Up-sponsored and external training opportunities with manager coaching and competency-guided progression
  • Support existing, and creatively expand, training and development programs in a way that minimizes disruption from staff’s day-to-day responsibilities   
  • Help managers develop functional, individualized development plans for all staff
  • Identify and recommend options for tracking effectiveness for training and development initiatives
  • Provide structure, process, and guidance for staff usage professional development dollars
  • Recommend “training and development” metrics for reporting to managers, senior leaders, and board
Diversity and Cultural Competency
  • Oversee and contribute to a holistic, multi-year effort to define and drive Year Up’s diversity and cultural competency strategy and outreach; create synergy off of work completed to date by broad, cross-sectional staff design team
  • Support all organizational leaders on topics of diversity and cultural competency, and drive cross-organization conversations
  • Update and refine diversity and cultural competency initiatives based on student, staff, and stakeholder feedback
Staff Relations and Culture
  • Engage all levels of Year Up by providing confidential and meaningful conduits for important employee feedback to be shared and acted upon
  • Provide recommendations on ways to continuously improve staff experience
  • Oversee production of three-day annual staff retreat by cross-site and cross-functional retreat committee; and work closely with National Operations team in designing thematic retreat focus
  • Supervise design, implementation, analysis, and follow-up of annual staff survey, ensuring that Executive Directors provide input at all stages of the process
  • Continuously link people development strategy to overall organizational goals
  • Initiate and drive projects related to cultivating and supporting Year Up culture, staff satisfaction, and student/staff connection
  • Recommend “staff relations and culture” metrics for reporting to managers, senior leaders, and board

  • Masters degree a plus
  • Management experience required
  • 10+ years relevant experience, preferably in a services organization that invested heavily in staff development, and a proven track record:
    • building/adapting/innovating talent life cycle programs and
    • linking those programs to corporate strategy, mission and culture

This role is a new position that will oversee a current team of four including an associate director of finance, a controller, a finance manager and a finance specialist. S/he will report directly to Sue Meehan, the National Director of Operations and Finance. The successful candidate for this position will be smart, strategic, diplomatic and proactive. S/he must also be flexible and able to work in a fast-paced, highly interactive environment. In addition to these key responsibilities, the finalist will be joining a team who provides leadership in creating and sustaining a positive educational environment, with trust among students and staff. RESPONSIBILITIES

Financial Management and Oversight
  • Oversee cash flow planning, investment, asset management, and ensure availability of funds
  • Ensure timeliness and accuracy of monthly and annual financial statements
  • Ensure legal and regulatory compliance regarding all financial functions
  • Oversee annual audit and proper filing of tax returns
  • Create, measure and implement a robust financial management/reporting system, including grants management
  • Design and implement financial systems that meet the needs of national expansion

  • Facilities management – liaise with operations staff across all sites to ensure efficient and consistent operations
  • Real Estate Planning - negotiation of leases, ensuring adequate program and administrative space needs, etc.
  • Oversee compliance function and ensure organization is meeting all necessary legal requirements
  • Risk Management – work closely with the senior team to minimize exposure to risk
Team Leadership, Planning and Strategy
  • Together with the National Director of Finance & Operations, this position will lead and facilitate the annual
    budget planning process; direct and administer all financial plans and budgets; and monitor progress.
  • Develop financial business plans and forecasts; analyze program effectiveness and model growth projections.
  • Participate in organization-wide policy decisions as member of the Senior Director team.
  • Lead, develop and manage the Finance and Administration team, including an Associate Director of Finance,
    Controller, Finance Manager and Finance Coordinator.
  • Liaise with senior leaders and line program staff to ensure that future financial needs are accommodated
  • Work closely with senior development staff to ensure clarity around long term funding requirements.

 

Qualifications
  • A CPA and/or MBA with at least 5 years experience in a senior level finance role, preferably in a nonprofit
    organization with a budget of $8 million or more
  • Experience in a senior role, partnering with executive staff, resulting in the development and implementation of
    creative financial management strategies
  • Experience with finance and accounting software packages. Experience with MIP a plus.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and presentation skills.
  • Excellent analytical and organizational skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability in a flexible, team oriented, and high growth environment.

Year Up Boston is seeking an entrepreneurial and results-oriented Manager, Foundation Relations to join its Development team to manage all fundraising activities related to foundation, corporate and government grants. RESPONSIBILITIEs

  • Steward relationships with existing foundation partners, securing and coordinating pertinent information and meetings, and develop effective relationships with potential new supporters
  • Conceptualize, plan, write, edit, steward and report on grant proposals to achieve budget goals

  • Establish and implement systems to ensure an effective grant-writing process, including tracking grant application statuses, creating and managing a grants and reporting calendar, and developing high-quality proposal templates

Qualifications

  • 2+ years of professional fundraising experience in a fast-paced, entrepreneurial nonprofit environment
  • Exceptional writing skills; experience writing and managing grants strongly preferred

Reporting to the Senior Director of Information Technology, who works in the National Office in Boston, MA, and working closely with the Director of Operations in the New York City Site, the IT Support Specialist is responsible for providing phone and direct technology support to the New York City site. He/she also serves as a member of the National IT staff providing coverage to other sites as necessary and working on organization wide information technology projects.   The person in this position continually keeps abreast of industry trends and analyzes, recommends, and implements new solutions. RESPONSIBILITIEs

  • Be the focal point for new account, hardware and software requests
  • As a member of the National IT group, serve as the liaison for the local site on all IT issues and projects
  • Deploy images to staff and student PCs
  • Maintain an inventory of hardware and software for the site

  • Perform routine system maintenance, including system updates, log checking, etc.

The Director of Development will work closely with the Executive Director to grow Year Up San Francisco Bay Area’s funding stream of individuals, foundations, and grants.  The candidate will be responsible for creating the systems, processes and procedures for a high-performing Development Department.  The candidate will also help the Executive Director steward existing donors as well as identify new prospects from outside the current donor pool, cultivate those relationships, identify gift opportunities that match donor interests, and secure major gifts from these prospects. S/he will also be responsible for writing compelling grant proposals and managing grant reporting.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

  • Infrastructure Build-Out
    • Create procedures and processes for a high-performing Development Department.
    • Leverage Salesforce.com development module and implement processes and procedures for cultivation and stewardship of institutional and individual donors.
  • Preparation and Prospecting
    • Develop extensive knowledge and understanding of Year Up in order to present its mission and programs to prospects in both written and oral format
    • Identify and research new funding opportunities, leveraging internal and external sources
    • Prepare cultivation, solicitation and stewardship documents; devise and take action on new and improving approaches
    • Work with the Executive Director to develop proposal budgets, write concept papers and proposal narratives, and assemble supporting materials
    • Work across team and sites to identify and cultivate additional relationships
  • Relationship Management
    • Steward existing relationships through mail, phone and in-person contact
    • Develop and demonstrate in-depth relationships with Year Up key donors and foundations, delivering high customer service at all times
    • Organize and manage paper and electronic files related to funders and their corresponding deadlines
    • Prepare and manage donor and grant correspondence, from formal grant reporting to donor correspondence
    • Analyze and track relationships in Salesforce.com
  • Event Planning and Production
    • Plan and manage cultivation events and other special programs on- and off-site for current and potential donors and external contacts
    • Engage program and senior staff in the preparation and presentation of the organization at events
  • Student Facilitation and Advising
    • Develop successful and trusting relationships with the students and create and sustain an environment at Year Up that supports these relationships
    • Facilitate learning sessions and serve as an advisor to Year Up students
    • Attend weekly Learning Community meeting

POSITION DESCRIPTION

  • The ideal candidate will be a smart, articulate, flexible, seasoned manager capable of working independently and taking initiative.
  • Resourceful and creative in his/her approach to problem solving,
  • The ideal candidate will be both driven to generate and lead new projects and partnerships and prepared to manage all of the back-end work involved in a start-up organization with a lean staffing model.
  • S/he will be a natural net-worker, familiar with the fundraising landscape and comfortable and effective at navigating the cultural and political nuances of donor communities. 
  • The ideal candidate will have full working knowledge of corporate and foundation giving and tracking system management.
  • In keeping with Year Up’s values, the Director will interact with students as an advisor and group facilitator, participating in creating and sustaining a positive education environment, with trust among students, faculty and work site leaders

Skill Set

  • Available to the DC site as a senior, experienced development resource with a proven track record. Providing a full compliment of skills including direct solicitation, goal management, donor management and staff management.
  • Has own individual portfolio of prospects and annual goal.
  • Centralized development functions ensure standardization as well as high levels of execution.
  • Devise and oversee all mailings, donor correspondence, grant proposals and foundation reports.
  • Leverage time of Executive Director and National leaders in cultivating high-potential donors and prospects.
  • Work closely with the Executive Director to review structure of development teams ability to achieve and grow resources.
  • Must be able to build an active annual fund, major gifts, events, principle and capital gifts as well as planned gifts; corporations and foundations giving.
  • The Director  will be responsible for focusing their efforts and maintaining databases so all are clear on what monies have been committed, what monies are outstanding and when those should be collected and how.

 

Qualifications

  • A Bachelor’s Degree (Master’s Degree preferred) and 7-10 years of management experience in all aspects of fundraising;
  • Excellent writing, verbal and interpersonal communication skills; extensive experience overseeing teams and workgroups, and the ability to work with minimum supervision and meet expected goals;
  • A proven track record in effective implementation of strategic fundraising, and be able to demonstrate an ability to articulate the organization’s position in the marketplace;
  • High levels of motivation, energy and confidence, with strong interpersonal and presentation skills;
  • Ability to multitask and meet deadlines;
  • Successful candidate will possess the ability to develop superb working relationships with staff centrally and in field offices as well as contractors, volunteers, partners, investors;
  • Experience in fundraising systems a must;
  • A passion for working with urban youth and an unshakable belief in their potential;
  • A strong work ethic and positive attitude, with a willingness to be flexible and do whatever it takes to get the job done;
  • Occasional domestic travel is required.

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Year Up is an exciting and dynamic organization whose mission is to prepare urban young adults for work and learning in our technology-driven society, guiding them toward successful and rewarding careers and higher education. Founded in 2000, Year Up offers its students a one-year program of intensive technical and professional skills training, paid internships. The Greater Washington site seeks a Partner Relations Manager to join their staff team. The Partner Relations Manager reports to the Greater Washington site’s Director of Apprenticeships.

Key Responsibilities
  • Coordinating corporate partner relations including organizing corporate events, scheduling orientation meetings, and conducting corporate site visits to support apprentices.
  • Ensure that upon apprenticeship placements that students receive a packet with job description, company information, contact information, questions to ask on orientation meetings, paper, pen, etc.
  • Increase knowledge of Survey Monkey and to ensure that the surveys are sent out accordingly and that the responses are received in a timely manner.
  • Assist Year Up members in transitioning from students/interns to alumni members of the program.
  • Responsible for providing DC content to the quarterly alumni newsletter and ensuring contact information is current and information is being distributed accordingly.
  • Responsible for database management of DC alumni information, newsletters, and announcements.
  • In addition to these responsibilities, and in keeping with Year Up’s values, the position requires interaction with students as advisor and advocate. 
  • Responsible for all partner communications, conflict resolution, and compliance on partner interactions
  • Ensures that partner issues are dealt with in an efficient manner, informing the AD of any problems that may arise.
  • Manages the student contract
  • Works closely with AR to change and edit invoices
  • Aware and in pursuit of account growth and new business, involving the AD
  • Uses Sales Force as the main source for contact management
  • Provides regular two-way communication between the partner and team, to provide strong team representation and set proper partner expectations.
  • Reports to the AD, providing regular input on all account activity, including status and call reports on a weekly/daily basis.


Qualifications

  • A proven passion for working with urban youth and an unshakable belief in their potential;
  • Minimum 3 years of account management experience;
  • Proven account management skills required in order to create, maintain and enhance customer relationships;
  • Documented strengths in meaningful relationship building, management and growth:  a consummate net-worker who is able to move comfortably and credibly in the community;
  • Strong attention to detail and follow-up;
  • Strong technical competence;
  • Skilled at the art of negotiation;
  • Responds to stressful situations and deadlines proactively and not reactively
  • Ability to plan, introduce and lead a process that enables high quality growth;
  • Ability to lead, willingness to be led, and comfortable with situational leadership;
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision;
  • Self starter and takes initiative; and
  • Bachelor’s degree preferred
