On January 25th, 2008, Year Up Providence graduated its fifth class of students at the Westin Providence. The graduation ceremony featured a keynote address by Colonel Dean Esserman, Chief of Providence Police. Teny Gross of the Institute for the Study & Practice of Nonviolence received Year Up's Urban Empowerment Award. Platinum sponsors of the event were Bank of America, Microsoft, Citizens Bank and Stop & Shop. Gilbane supported the event as a Gold Sponsor and table sponsors included Bank Rhode Island, Collette Vacations, FGX International, GTECH, Hayes & Sherry, and Textron.
Twenty-two students between ages 18 and 24 graduated from the one-year program this year. Graduates Derek Amado and Judy Kong provided reflections and inspiration during the ceremony.
